Acting against common bunt: exploration of various control methods Organic Eprints
Fontaine, Laurence; Robin, N.; Bruyère, J.; du CHEYRON, P..
Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida) is a fungal disease with a large ability to spread. Consequences may be rejection of grains for sale or even a large decrease of yield. Different trials were carried out in organic farming in a research project (funded by the French Ministry of Agriculture between 2008 and 2011) to achieve a better control of common bunt. Results confirm that the resistance of wheat cultivars is a factor to consider. Despite most varieties currently cultivated in organic farming are sensitive to common bunt, some cultivars appeared to be resistant to the races tested. Concerning seed treatment, no product is available for organic farming and 100% efficient; but several solutions have been identified. Only one product is...

Pollen beetles (Meligethes sp.) are important pests in oilseed rape (Brassica napus). In our study we wanted to determine which landscape structures have an influence on pollen beetle population in early spring. The dynamics of pollen beetle population and the damages on rape were studied on field scale level with 100 sampling points per field and on landscape scale level with 18 organic oilseed rape fields which differed by the complexity of the surrounding landscapes. The number of pollen beetle was strongly correlated with the distance to a forest. At the beginning of the flight period more pollen beetles were found close to the forest, later they migrated to the rest of the field. In addition, agricultural practices appeared to be determinant...

Olfactometer screening of repellent essential oils against the pollen beetle (Meligethes spp.). Organic Eprints
Daniel, Claudia.
Essential oils can have an impact on pollen beetle (Meligethes spp.) host plant location behaviour. Lavender oil (Lavendula angustifolia) showed the highest repellency value in a previous laboratory study that compared five different essential oils (Mauchline et al., 2005). However, lavender oil is one of the most expensive essential oils – a fact that could seriously hamper on-farm implementation of this strategy. To find a cheaper essential oil with comparable efficacy to lavender oil, we compared the essential oils of Mentha arvensis, Eucalyptus globulus, Melaleuca alternifolia, Citrus sinensis, Citrus paradisi, Citrus limon, Juniperus mexicana, Abies sibirica, Illicium verum, Gaultheria procumbens, Cymbopogon flexuosus, Syzygium aromaticum, and Litsea...

The potential of silicate rock dust to control pollen beetles (Meligethes spp.) Organic Eprints
Daniel, Claudia; Dierauer, Hansueli; Clerc, Maurice.
In organic agriculture, treatments with rock dusts for soil amendment, disease prevention, or insect control have a long tradition. Clinoptilolite (a naturally occurring zeolite) was tested against pollen beetle Meligethes spp. in organic and IPM oilseed rape fields in order to find a control strategy compatible with the guidelines for organic and IPM agriculture in Switzerland. Dust and spray applications were evaluated in several large-scale field trials from 2008 to 2011. Dust applications using 300-750 kg/ha pulverized Clinoptilolite (particle size < 0.1 mm; product Klinofeed, available from Unipoint, Switzerland) were applied using a drop-box fertilizer spreader or a Vicon pendulum spreader. For spray applications the same Clinoptilolite (product...

Versuchsbericht Raps 2008 Organic Eprints
Daniel, Claudia.

Versuchsbericht Raps 2010 Organic Eprints
Daniel, Claudia.

Versuchsbericht Raps 2011 Organic Eprints
Daniel, Claudia.
